There is nothing more beautiful than a traditional kitchen in ones home. Modern kitchens I suppose also have a place but they just don’t do it for me. The atmosphere must be relaxed which cannot be achieved with icy cold marble and chrome.
Here are 4 ideas to help you with your plans:
Idea One: The first thing you could do to get that cozy country feel, is to accessorize your kitchen with objects that look dated. Replace your glass jars with antique looking storage tins, place some wicker baskets around, hang a copper pot or pan on a wall. String some dried vegetables and hang them in a corner. You need to think earth with natural looking vases or pots. Get a terracotta pot and store your potatoes on a shelf somewhere. Do your windows with blinds that also look old fashioned.
Idea Two: Wood just makes a room look intimate. It makes you want to spend time in it. Therefore it will be stunning if you could source a good oak. It is extremely durable and always looks most elegant when contrasted with old type dcor. If you don’t have enough money to redo your entire kitchen cabinets, then only have oak doors installed on your existing shelves. No one will know the difference.
Useful idea Three: Correct lighting can be very appealing in a kitchen. It can create a fantastic ambiance in the room by subtly highlighting an expensive bowl or an antique that you inherited from a great aunt. Opt for some small recess lighting units to be installed under your cabinets and in your cabinets where you have glass panels.
Useful idea Four: Your flooring will also set the tone of your kitchen. Here you can opt for natural stone. It will instantly give a country feel. Look into slate with a darker shade than your oak finish as it will compliment your cabinets beautifully. You could also have them cut into smaller slabs and do up a wall in your kitchen with the same slate. It actually looks spectacular if you slate the wall behind where your stove and hob is standing. Here one can imagine that you are cooking from a fireplace. It creates a great focal point to the kitchen as well.
Lastly, try and remember that a kitchen is the heart of a home. You need to get as much family trinkets in this room as possible. A photo here and there of a recent family event will always spark conversation. Maybe an old baseball perched on its stand on a small shelf. Or what about your favorite cook book displayed on a counter. The idea of a traditional kitchen is to make it personal for everyone in the home, not just the cook.
